The reason why Janie's marriage with joe is falling apart is because he doesn't treat her with respect. " The spirit of marriage left the bedroom and took a living at the parlor. It was there to shake hands whenever company come to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom." Joe always tells her what not to say anything and just to keep quiet. He is disrespectful when he does something wrong. " A woman stay round uh store till she get old as methusalem and still can't cut a little plug of tobacco." That's when she began making herself just keep quiet whether she's with the towns folks or when her husband tells her something . He also insults her about her age and she hated it and one day she had talked back . " Stop mixin' up mah doings wid mah looks, Jody ...then you kin tell me whether mah behind is on straight or not." Overall, Joe treats her bad and limits her to everying she says and done. She has no freedom.
Joe Starks's is the perpetrator of a failing marriage with Janie Starks, primarily due to his opinions and stereotypes on women. For example, "When Ah see one thing Ah understands ten. You see ten things and don't understand one." - Joe (pg. 71). Joe doesn't care for Janie's ideas, he refuses to listen to her thoughts, and deems them as invalid. The only thing Joe cares for in Janie is her good looks, especially her long hair. Despite that, he shows no interest in her, leaving her isolated in the house and the shop while he manages town affairs. Joe's refusal to listen, and Janie's sense of isolationism, result in the utter failure of a relationship they experience after being in marriage for over 20 years.
The reason why Joes Stark's relationship with Janie failed in my opinion was because Joe was jelous, which led to disrespect . " Her hair was NOT going to show in the store. It didnt seem sensible at all. That was because Joe never told Janie how jelous he was." Joe was the kind of person that was too proud to let his true emotions show. " Yo' wife is uh born orator, Starks. us never knowed dat befo'. She put jus' de right words tuh our thoughts. Joe bit down hard on his cigar and beamed all around, but he never said a word." He knew that kind of women he had but will never dare to show people or Janie how much he appreciated her. So he would make her feel unappreciated " Naw it ain't neither. You ain't put it where Ah told yuh tuh. If you'd git yo' mind out de streets and keep it on yo' business maybe you could git somethin' straight sometimes.... So gradually, she pressed her teeth together and learned to hush" She began keeping herself quiet. "The spirit of marriage left the bedroom and took a living at the parlor. It was there to shake hands whenever company come to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom." Janie then realized that their relationship was going down the drain, they were just together due to the fact that they were used to each other. " She found that out one day when he slapped her face in the kitchen." Until one day Joe made fun of her age and of the fact that she still didnt know how to cut a plug of tobacco in front of the whole store, Janie decided to talk back, "Stop mixin' up mah doings wid mah looks, Jody. When you git through tellin' me how tuh cut uh plug uh tobacco, then you kin tell me wheter mah behind is on straight or not." Since that moment Joe would not say one single word to Janie or even eat her food because she didnt show any "sympathy" for all that he had given her, until pne day she had the courage to let all her feelings spill; that same day Joe Starks died. Overall, i feel like Joe's strategy towards his relationship with Janie was to actually care for her but because he was very jelous he would make her feel like she was not good enough for anything due to all his limitations.
The reason their marriage failed was because the way joe treated her. Joe treated janie with no respect which cause their relationship to fall apart. "She wasnt a petal-open anymore. She was twenty-four and seven year marriage when she knew. She found that out one day when he slapped her in the kitchen"(page 71). In this quote she starting to question her marrige with him and how she not that open with becajse he shoots down every idea she has. The fighting also help question ne marrige when one day he will slap her in the kitchen. With no opinion or freedom in this relationship she decide to not go through with marrying joe.
The reason why Joe's and Janie's marriage didnt work was because they would get into arguments with each other. They would fight and those arguments would eventually led them to say things they wouldnt normally say to each other. "Dat's 'cause you need tellin'," he rejoined hotly. "It would be pitful if Ah didn't. Somebody got to think for women and chillun and chickens and cows. I god, they sho don't think none theirselves." Joe got so fired up that he insulted Janie by saying that women cant think by themselves. This makes Janie think about her marriage and how it is not how it used to be anymore. Because of Joe's behaviour Janie doesnt think their marriage works anymore
Janie and Joe's marriage failed because Joe treated Janie wrong and didn't pay enough attention to her as he should have. " You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall. And you could have but you was so busy worshippin' de works of yo' own hands, and cuffin' folks around in their minds till you didn't see uh whole heap uh things yuh could have." (chapter 8). Ever since Joe built up Eatonville and became mayor, he hasn't cared for his wife. He just demands her around and makes her work in the store and cook for him. She was never allowed to speak her mind or be part of any conversations. Joe was just trying to protect her from other men at first because he noticed them looking at her, but his protection became out of hand and she wasn't allowed to do anything anymore. Janie was sick of his behavior and spoke her mind, which led to Joe ignoring her until she last talked to him several minutes before his death. Janie learned from this marriage and the marriage before with Logan Killicks. -Dominique Briddell
Joe's and Janie's marriage fail due to the lost of comunication an the way Joe treated Janie making her have a lower selfsteem. In pg.70 a conflict occurs when trying to find some papers, "naw it aint neither. You aint't put it where Ah told yuh tuh. If you'd git yo' mind out de streets and keep it on yo' business maybe you could git somethin' straight sometimes." Meaning that Joe made Janie feel as if she couldn't even do a simple task as puting work papers were they belong. As well as another event that shows how Joe is a type of guy who expects other to follow his orders. Such as page 71,"you sho loves to tell me whut to do, but Ah can't tell you nothin' Ah see!" "Dat's cause you need tellin'" he rejoined hotly. "It would be pitiful if Ah didn't. Somebody got to think for women and chillun and chickens and cows. I god, they sho don't think none theirselves." Meaning that Joe express himself as telling that women dont think and therefore men have to boss them around making his marriage be worst since he believe Janie couldn't do anything an that she couldn't even think for her self. Elizabeth Rodriguez
Janie and Joe's marriage failed because Joe lost his charm and his respect for Janie. She became nothing special to him. Soon, he believed Janie didn't appreciate the things he does for her. The author wrote, "Here he was just pouring honor all over her; building a high chair for her to sit in and overlook the world and she here pouting over it!" Janie then realizes that her relationship with Joe has crumbled to dust.
Janie and Joe's marriage failed because of his lack of respect and the loss of affection between them. "The bed was no longer a daisy-field for her and Joe to play in. It was a place where she went and laid down when she was sleepy and tired (pg.71)." Janie ran off with Jody because of the way he treated her in the beginning and how he was a man of power. Later, as he started to gain more power over the town-being mayor and all-he paid less attention to Janie, and started to treat her with less respect. He was very controlling and would both verbally and physically abuse her. She had no freedom. Throughout the chapters, Janie grows tired of all of it and when Joe is laying on his death bed, she tries to get him to pay attention and listen to her, but sees that there's no way to change a man who became a completely different person, even when he's facing death. "Listen, Jody, you ain't de Jody ah run off down de road wid. You'se what's left after he died (pg. 86)."
The reason why Janie's marriage with Joe did not work out is because he has no respect towards her. Joe was not the way he was in the beginning. He was controlling, "Her hair was not going to show in the store." pg. 55, Joe is showing jealousy towards this situation. Joe did not want for other men to be looking at her long hair. Their marriage was not the same, it kept changing day by day.
With Jody becoming the mayor of Eatonville, he valued most of his time toward making the city a better place to live in, instead of spending time with his wife Janie. For example in chapter 8 Janie says, "you done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me at all."(pg.86) Janie knows Joe is a busy man due to him being a mayor, but she feels unappreciated for everything that she does around the store and house. Janie also became disinterested in Jody by his physical appearance, he became saggy and old while she still felt young. Overall, these factors caused Janie's and Joe's marriage to fail, and gave the reason for Janie to show no sympathy when Jody passed away.
I think the marriage between Joe and Janie failed because Joe always made Janie feel low self-esteem. In chapter 7, Joe made Janie feel bad by saying, " Dat's something for de young folks, Janie, you out dere jump in' round and won't be able to git out de bed tuhmorre (pg.77)." All this made the marriage to fail because Joe didn't let Janie to enjoy and put her down. Also he wouldn't let her talk to nobody from the neighborhood. For an example, in chapter 6, it says, " He didn't want her talking after such trashy people (pg.54)." So from all this Janie saw that this wasn't the marriage she thought it will be and couldn't do anything for many years. Marriage shouldn't be like Joe and Janie's that doesn't have communication. Joe is the only one that makes the choices and doesn't let Janie to do what she wants (like making choices with him) and he disrespects her.
One reason why Janie's commitment was a failure was because Joe devoted too much time to his job as mayor and didn't spend quality time with his wife. In chapter 6 it speaks of Janie getting fed up with the store while Joe went off and did things Janie wanted to partake of as well. Janie "had come to hate the inside of that store."(pg.107). Later the chapter goes on to say "the store itself kept her with a sick headache"(pg.107). Janie was tired of having to watch over the store, she wanted to be with her husband yet Joe didn't see that and thought she was happy. Joe was not understanding and figured she had it all and should be proud of her life. Yet, Joe failed to see this and therefore the result was another unsuccessful marriage.
Joe and Janie's marriage was basicly fake from start to end. Janie's love for Joe was genuine; as the love from Joe to Janie was false. "She got nothing from Jody except what money could buy, and she was giving away what she didn't value."-chapter 7 first paragraph last sentence. Quote states that Janie has nothing else to live for, but Jody only wants Janie for het looksJoe and Janie's marriage was basicly fake from start to end. Janie's love for Joe was genuine; as the love from Joe to Janie was false. "She got nothing from Jody except what money could buy, and she was giving away what she didn't value."-chapter 7 first paragraph last sentence. Quote states that Janie has nothing else to live for, but Jody only wants Janie for her looks, and especially her hair because he has no one touch it, or even look at it. Joe was the cause of an unsuccessful marriage because he wasn't the right husband for Janie.
Joe and Janie's marriage failed because Joe didn't demonstrate love to Janie, he was always hurting her physically and mentally. "...he slaped Janie until she had a ringing sound in her ears and told her about her brains before he stalked on back to the store.''(pg.72) "You oughta throw somethin' over yo' shoulders befo' you go outside. You ain't no young pullet no mo'. You'se uh ole hen now."(pg.77) Insults and aggressions were only the start in their marriage, and from there fighting. In a way were Janie couldn't live with it anymore, and even though Joe try to fix it, Janie didn't try to forgive him, she was tired. Janie never got what she wanted from Joe which was love. Instead she only got things that money could buy. "She got nothing from Jody except what money could buy, and she was giving away what she didn't value."(pg.76) Making this a failure to their marriage. Ailyn Flores
Due to Joe's lack of respect for his wife, their marriage soon drove to an end. For example, "Janie, Ah reckon you better go fetch me dem old black gaiters. Dese tan shoes sets mah feet on fire. Plenty room in 'em, but they hurts regardless."(Page 57) Joe has no intention of treating Janie as an equal but as if she is below him. The emotional abuse from Joe is constant and becomes a main factor in the failure of their marriage. Another factor that played out in this marriage is how Joe thought Janie was poisoning his food and avoided to eat her cooking. For example, "She was worried about his not eating his meals, till she found out he was having old lady Davis to cook for him. She knew that she was a much better cook than the old woman, and cleaner about the kitchen. So she bought a beef-bone and made him some soup. "Naw, thank you," he told her shortly. "ah'm havin' uh hard enough time tuh try and git well as it is." The lack of trust along with Joe's disrespect of Janie leads to the end of their relationship.
The reason why Joe and Janie's marriage failed was because Joe stopped showing Janie love and respect. He went from being young and in love, to just using Janie as an accessory/ prop. Throughout the years of marriage things just sort of became a routine between their home and the shop, nothing more. For example "You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall", page 101. This shows that after a while he didnt even bother to finish getting to know Janie. And even though their love died they stayed together.
Janie and Joe's marriage didn't work out because they had some problems. Janie couldn't even put real feelings to Joe anymore. Janie had to keep her real emotions aside. "... and numerous emotions she had never let Jody know about..." (pg.73) "...she was saving up feelings for some man she had never seen..." (pg.73) Joe was very harsh with Janie in the marriage when they fight. When Joe apologize for his mistake, Janie doesn't ever forgive him because she got exhausted from being hit all the time. She never found love for him after getting hit so many times. Even though for Joe mistake for giving "presents" to her whenever he hit her. Money can never be a replacement for love and that is how Janie's sees it. That is why Janie marriage too Joe was a failure. Abusement to Janie in all kinds of ways and never having love. - Bobbi Cordle 2nd Period
Joe and Janie's marriage failed because of many reasons such as lack of communication, love, and respect. Janie loved and respected Joe and did everything in her power to please him, but she was not getting the same in return. Joe was mainly worried about the growth of the town, so Janie was neglected, and there is only so much that one person can take. "She wanted to fight about it. But Ah hates disagreement and confusion, so Ah better not talk. It makes it hard tuh git along." (page 67) This quote explains how Janie just wanted to please Joe. If she had something to say she would not say it just to keep the peace, when in reality you have to let your loved one know how you feel about something. Janie was giving respect and love but was not receiving it, therefore their marriage failed.
The marriage between Joe and Janie didnt work out because he was disrespectful to her he just bossed her around in chapter 6 Joe had gotten to the shop well janie was in the back and he raised his voice and made her get in the front they didn't speak for a little until he looked as his feet and said "janie Ah reckon you better go fetch me dem old black gaiters Dese tan shoes sets may feet on fire. plenty room in them but regardless".Janie got up not saying anything back to Joe in her head she said " But ah hates disagreement and confusion so ah better not talk. It makes it hard tuh git along" pg.57 in these two quotes you can see right away how the relationship is Joe is very dominate he bosses Janie around and she just takes it because she doesn't want to make things harder on herself. Joe very controlling of Janie. This is why the relationship failed.
Joe's and Janie's relationship failed because Joe was a jealous and possessive man. "Her hair was NOT going to show in the store" (pg.55). Obviously the marriage was not going right since he got so demanding about her hair being shown in public. Joes also didn't treat Janie right, he didn't have respect for her. "The bed was no longer a daisy-field for her and Joey to play in" (pg.71). This shows that Joe has no respect toward Janie and that he only sees her as an object. Joe gets really demanding and bossy with Janie.
In my opinion the reason the marriage failed was because Joe treated her more like a trophy than a wife. He didn't respect her and treated her more like a servant rather than a wife. He thought she would love him if he gave her lots of fancy stuff and luxurious living conditions. Also how Joe constantly berated her when she was doing anything."When Ah see one thing Ah understands ten. You see ten things and don't understand one."
Jody appeared to be a very nice man when he first turned up in the novel, but as Janie comes to realize, he has a very ugly personality. He begins to show cruelty towards not only Janie, but also his customers. He covers up his ugly change in appearance by insulting Janie and hitting her when he cant think of anything else to say, "he struck Janie with all his might and drove her from the store"(Hurston 80). With the constant verbal and physical abuse, Janie couldn''t really love him, but she still took care of him until his death. Before his death though, she got her revenge.
The reason why Joe and Janie's marriage failed was because of the many insults. Janie ran away with a man who loved her just the way she was but after years of marriage Joe treated her differently. He always pointed out her age and wouldn't let her speak her mind. "Because he began to talk about her age all the time, as if he didn't want her to stay young while he grew old. It was always 'You oughta throw somethin' over yo' shoulders befo' you go outside. You ain't no young pullet no mom's. You'se uh old hen now.'" Jaine grew old of these insults but it was already too late for a divorse after many years of standing with this. She wanted to fix it before Joe died but he was to stubburn. -Julia Martinez
The marriage inbetween Joe and Janie failed because as time passed by, she saw his true colors. Joe wasn't the man he showed Janie when they first met. When they first met, he fronted the appearance of being a gentleman but after awhile he commenced to become who he truly was. Striking Janie and disrespecting "She found out when he slapped her in the kitchen." Ch. 7
joe at first seemed like the perfect guy for jody like he was going to be the one she was going to stay with but sometimes Appearances deceive and he started treating her really ugly that she was just tired of it. and Jody kept deteriorating and, as a result, his verbal attacks become more vicious and frequent. One day, Janie makes a clumsy mistake while cutting a plug of tobacco for a customer. Jody begins berating her in front of the store crowd, not only mocking her incompetence but also insulting her looks. Janie finally releases her pent-up aggression. She insults his sagging body and declares that he looks like “de change uh life” when naked. The force of the insult stuns the men on the porch. Jody feels impotent, his reputation in the town diminished and his power vanishing. He lashes out in a blind rage, fiercely hitting Janie and driving her from the store.
Janie's marriage with Joe Stark started to grow apart over the years. It might have been because of his old age, or it might have been because of Joe's town that he was Mayor for. Janie kept all these things that she felt would jeopardize and distract Joe from his work completely to herself. She didn't let nobody know about them-not even Jody. Janie just lived day by day, knowing that if something goes wrong with Joe-well who knows where she would end up? For all we know she can end up with someone like Logan Killicks who used their marriage as a source of labor. The author says on the 72nd page, 2nd paragraph that "She had found that she had lost a host of thoughts she had never expressed to him (Joe), and numerous emotions she had never let Jody know about." It is these hosts of thoughts that she had kept secret and Joe Starks' Mayorship and focus on the town along with old age that contributed to the downfall of Joe and Janie's marriage.
The reason was because after a while of there marriage. She started thinking of herself as worthless and thinking of how a different life would be. Her husband even began to treat he4 badly not like he used to or promised her.
The marriage between Joe and Janie soon failed for many reasons. The first being that Joe wanting to run a town no longer made Janie his priority this is stated when Janie says "we ain't natural wid one another" pg 54 this shows that Janie no longer felt connected with Joe. Then when Joe responds with a careless fact that he hasn't even begun showed that she will be ignored for a long time. Then the relationship ship soon reaches its breaking point when he doesn't allow her to speak and soon raises his hand to her in the kitchen.
The marriage between Janie and Joe had many complications in the relationship. The amount of affection towards one another had been lost as did the respect. "Janie, Ah reckon you better go fetch me dem old black gaiters. Dese tan shoes sets mah feet on fire. Plenty room in 'em, but they hurts regardless."(Page 57) The way that Joe speaks to Janie shows that he feels that he is above her and doesn't speak to her as an equal human being. Janie feels that Joe doesn't even think of her as his wife anymore. She believes he views her more as a slave.
Joe and Janie's relationship lacked communication, Janie never had a voice in the relationship. It was always Joe giving Janie commands to run the store, because he thought that was her place instead of asking her where she would like her place to be. If Janie asked to go out he would tell her no and make her say at the store. Joe treated Janie as an employee instead of a wife for all of their marriage. "You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall." (pg.86) Even on Joe's death bed the couple are bickering about how they weren't happy in they're relationship. Janie wanted to be with the Joe she ran away with, not the Joe who assumed he knew what was best of her. That was another problem in the relationship, Joe always assumed he knew what was best for Janie.
The reason why Joe and Janies marriage didn't work is because Joe disrespected her so much by bossing her around and also talking so much bad stuff behind her back and also in public and that is not right. One example when Joe is so bossy is when (pg.57) he bosses her to go and get something for him."Janie, Ah reckon you better go fetch me dem old black gaiters. Dese tan shoes...etc."What this quote means is that he can boss her around and when Joe is done telling her to get him these shoes she doesn't tell him nothing and goes to get them. So that is why their marriage failed because he is so disrespectful to her and doesn't realize what she has done for him and their life.
The reason why joes and Janie's marriage failed was because they would argue and hardly communicated. Joe would disrespect Janie and he wouldn't pay much attention to her. Since joe built up eatonville and became mayor he didn't care for Janie as much as he should have. Joe told janie that women can't think by themselves which made Janie think about her marriage and how it wasn't the same as it used to be. "You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall. And you could have but you was so busy worshippin de works of yo own hands, and cuffin folks around in their minds till you didn't see uh whole heap uh things yuh could have" chapter 8 Samantha Garcia 3rd
Joe and Janie’s marriage failed because Joe developed a controlling and abusive relationship with Janie. An example of one of the first forms of an over controlling husband was: “Janie loved the conversation and sometimes she thought up good stories on the mule, but Joe had forbidden her to indulge.” (Chapter 6). Joe restricts her from conversing with the people of the town and makes up the reason being as “Ah can't see what uh woman uh yo' stability would want tuh be treasurin' all dat gum-grease from folks dat don't even own de house dey sleep in.” Shortly in the novel, Joe and Janie get into a fight about hammering each other about their age and appearance. Janie gets so angry and embarrasses Joe and his “manhood”. Joe slaps her for making a fool of him in front of the men who would no longer regard him with dignity, only shame. "So he struck Janie with all his might and drove her from the store." (Chapter 7) Janie realizes that this marriage has failed and all she can do was wait for Joe to die. The original motive for running away from her prior neglectful husband, to Joe was because she assumed she would find love and be happy with him. Joe let his importance to Eatonville and authority manipulate him into a controlling and abusive husband. It dawns on Janie that the love is gone and therefore doesn’t try to work on the marriage, letting it slowly slip away. -Tameka Smith 2nd period
The marriage between Joe and Janie failed because they lacked communication, they hardly knew each other, and there was no mutual sense of respect. To illustrate, "You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall. And you could have but you was so busy worshippin' da works of yo' own hands, and cuffin' folks around in their minds till you didn't see uh whole heap uh things yuh could have." This excerpt is of Janie's outburst to Joe right before he died. She had finally realized that over the course of their marriage they never got to know each other because Joe was so wrapped up in the affairs of Eatonville. However, the town of Eatonville can not even be an excuse for the emotional neglect that Joe treated Janie with. Although they were together nearly every hour of the day, they were not with each other mentally or emotionally, they were just tolerant with other which led to the eventual failure of their marriage.
The marriage from Joe and Janie failed because at first Joe seemed like the man of the house and he was all romantic but in the end he turned out not to be what he seemed. "You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall" Joe has been living with her for 20 years and he doesn't even kno Janie, he just does whatever he wants and doesn't take in to consider her own opinion. Now on the other hand Janie also liked Joe for his money as stated in the book, "She got nothing from Jody except what money could buy..." Joe in the end wasn't being the guy he once was and that is the big part why their marriage failed.
Janie values herself as a person, so when Joe wanted Jaine to be a sort of "trophy wife" she was unhappy and felt trapped. She felt her marriage was just for show, and nothing more. For example, when Zora Neale Hurston writes.." The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands whenever company came to visit, but it was never went back inside the bedroom again." (pg 71) Joe became so caught up in having the mayor image, that he neglected Janie mentally and emotionally. There was no love in the marriage. Leaving Janie to crave something more..freedom. Also the sense of machismo in the marriage lead to its failure. This is shown after Joe dies when Janie states "Jody uster tell me Ah never would learn. It wuz too heavy fuh my brains." (pg 96) Janie is a strong women and the fact that Joe thought that men and women were not equal took a strain on the marriage. When Joe would tell Janie time and time again that she couldn't do certain things it made Janie feel like she was moving further and further into a prison, instead of being happy and loved. All in all Janie's personality, and the way Joe treated her didn't mix well ultimately leading to their failed marriage.
The reason why Janie's marriage with Joe didn't work out was because he wouldn't respect her anymore and wasn't romantic anymore like he said he would be. "The bed was no longer a daisy-field for her and Joe to play in" He was mean to her. He didn't care about her. Since he was never really with her,he didn't even know her. He wouldn't let Janie talk to the people around their neighboorhood. "He didn't want her talking after such trashy people" She never thought that this was how their marriage would be and she thought it wasn't fair so that's is why it failed.
The marriage between the Janie and Joe failed simply because they did not know each other as much as they thought they did. Joe and Janie lived with each other for twenty years, “You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall,” and it was more as a two-faced relationship. Joe stopped doing what he had done in the beginning and started to show the “real” him which was possessive and disrespectful. Joe bosses Janie around and Janie does nothing but comply with his demands, “Janie, Ah reckon you better go fetch me dem old black gaiters. Dese tan shoes sets mah feet on fire. Plenty room in 'em, but they hurts regardless…” Their marriage failed because the two of them didn’t work together to be one. Joe had authority over Janie, so the marriage went to the gutters.
Joe and Janie's marriage failed because it wasn't real. Janie had loved Joe and he had loved her appearance. She was only his trophy wife. Janie's label was "the Mayor's wife." "But de mayor's wife is something different..." "...you ain't goin' off in all dat mess uh commonness." Joe was a controlling husband and Janie was more obedient. They were unable to communicate on a deeper lever. Joe only told Janie what to do and where her place was. He never took the time to sit down, listen to her, learn about her, or love her.
Joe is the fake person of a failing marriage with Janie, primarily due to his opinions and beliefs on what a women should be. For example, "When Ah see one thing Ah understands ten. You see ten things and don't understand one." - Joe (pg. 71). Joe doesn't care for Janie's ideas, he refuses to listen to her or her ideas, and deems them as non excistant. The only thing Joe cares for in Janie is her good looks, Despite that, he shows no interest in her, leaving her isolated in the house and the shop while he manages town affairs. Joe's refusal to listen, and Janie's sense of alone is what drove their marriage off a cliff after a prolonged relationship.
Leonard A. Lafoe Janie and Jody's marriage failed mainly because Jody did not have a high opinion of women. Janie on the other hand, thinks she can do anything Jody does even if he won't let her. "'Ah knows uh few things, and womenfolks thinks sometimes too!' 'Aw naw they don't. They just think they's thinkin'. When Ah see one thing Ah understands ten. You see ten things and don't understand one.'" This aggravation that Janie has with Jody lasts all the way till Jody's deathbed, where Jody thinks she isn't even fit to be there when he dies. It's also kind of ironic that Logan wanted her to do things and she was reluctant, and Jody wouldn't let her do things and she really wanted to.
The marriage between Joe and Janie failed because of his controlling, physical and emotional abuse towards Janie. When they first arrived in Eatonville, after getting married, Joe soon became very obsessed with the idea to renovate the town and eventually becoming the Mayor and a dictator to Janie more than a loving husband. This illustrated the masculine power that he possesses and Janie experiences the effects of Joe’s dictatorial or bossy nature. Joe never accepts Janie for what she is and, instead he tries to shape her into his image of the type of woman that he wants, preventing her from speaking up and doing what she wants. For example, when Joe is very ill, Janie finally speaks her mind telling him “Naw, Jody, it wasn’t because Ah didn’t have no sympathy. Ah had uh lavish uh dat. Ah just didn’t never git no chnace tuh use none of it. You didn’t let me.”(pg85) His mistreatment and their broken marriage came to an end when Joe died, Janie later expressing, “Ah jus’ loves dis freedom.”(pg 93)
Joe and Janie's relationship did not work out because Joe did not respect Janie. Joe has jealousy and tries to control Janie. "Her hair was not going to show in the store." (pg. 55). The quote shows that Joe doesn't want anyone to even look at Janie. Their relationship showed to be unstable, making the marriage a failure.
Joe and Janie's marriage failed because of the way Joe treated Janie. He treated her like a bird in a cage, never letting her be free and do what she wants, but instead keeping her to himself and never letting go. Joe manipulated Janie by convincing her that she was too precious and delicate to interact with anyone else, making it seem like he wanted to treat her like a Queen but really just keeping Janie away from everybody else. It's shown when Joe doesn't allow Janie to speak to the men on the porch because they're "trashy people", according to him, meaning she's too good for them. She doesn't believe so and towards the end of Chapter 6, "Janie did what she had never done before, that is, thrust herself into the conversation."(pg 75) She realizes she's been told lies all those years of marriage and Joe Starks isn't the man she's supposed to be with.
Joe and Janie's marriage failed, because i wasn't a true love. They didn't know each other enough to have a deep loving for each other. They even lived together for twenty years but still didn't know anything about each other. “You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall." Joe only loved Janie for her appearance. she was like a trophy and he didn't want anybody else looking at her.Their marriage wasn't build on a solid foundation causing it to be unstable and fall apart.
It is my firm belief that the marriage failed because it was formed on false pretenses of love not unlike her previous marriage. Joe was so wrapped up in what he had done for the town that he never truly knew anything about his wife. As is told in this quote, "you done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall. And you could have but you was so busy worshippin' de works of yo' own hands, and cuffin' folks around in their minds till you didn't see uh whole heap uh things yuh could have." Joe thought women were nothing but things to look at and boast about. Janie is a very resilient person but twenty years of being put down and treated like less than human and more like a belonging would break any person.
Janie and Jody's relationship failed for many reasons. Jody and Janie don't have much communication with eachother, and when they do communicate, they are fighting. After a while, Janie is use to not getting through Jody's head , when fighting, that she just gives in during the argument. Also, another reason their marriage failed was because Jody is very controlling/ possessive when it comes to Janie. For example he demands that Janie wear her hair up from now on. He had once saw someone petting the strands of her hair that came out of her ponytail, and he had become jealous. He believed that Jane's was meant to be admired by him and only him. The last reason, was because after 20 years of being married, Jody begins to insult Janie about her age, and about her being old, when he is actually 10 years older than her. For example, " I god amighty! A woman stay round uh store till she get old as Methusalem and still can't cut a little thing like a plug of tobacco! Don't stand dere rollin' yo' pop eyes at me wid yo' rump hangin' nearly to yo' knees!", this is primarily one of the last things that Jody had told Janie about her age and had influenced her to talk back to Jody, and causes them to fight, and realize that after many years their marriage isn't hasn't been the best, and that they have changed throughout the years of being together.
Janie's and Joe's relationship ended because as they're relationship grew, their love got smaller. The spirit of marriage left the bedroom and took a living at the parlor. It was there to shake hands whenever company come to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom. This shows how Janie truly felt towards Jody. He put on a front in front of everybody. Jody in all honestly was just treating her like a slaves, he would order her to do things such as stay inside because he didn't want her sitting outside with others, he also told her to cover up her hair, and he orders her to attend to people inside the store. She was more of a slave than a wife to him, this is what cause arguments which lead to them ending their relationship. -Adeola Akomolafe 1st period.
Joe And Janie's marriage failed for many reasons as the reader is able to observe throughout the novel. Joe is portrayed as a jealous controlling man that cant seem to treat Janie right, though she is a very good wife. "Her hair was NOT going to show in the store... Joe never told Janie how jealous he was. He never told her how often he had seen the other men figuratively wallowing in it as she went about things in the store." (pg.55). This quote shows how Joe feels he is entitled to how Janie should look and be presented in front of other men. as well as the insecurities he has of losing her to another man. Their marriage also failed because Joe made Jannie feel unintelligent. " When ah see one thing ah understands ten. You see ten things and don't understand one." (pg.71). This quote is showing the reader that Joe is lessening her value to make her think he is as good as she'll ever be able to get. Joe made many snide remarks, remarks that shouldn't be said to any women, let alone his life. " Dat's somethin" for de young folks, Janie, you out dere jumpin' round and wont be able tuh git out de bed tuhmorrer."(pg.77). Joe is commenting on her age reminding her that she is old and that she isn't the young girl that she was. Throughout these chapters one can see a promise of a perfect marriage turn to a living hell for Janie. All because a man was so scared of losing his beautiful wife he talks her down and ends up talking himself out of their marriage. At this point in the novel Janie cant seem to find a man that shows her the true meaning of love and marriage.
Joe and Janie's relationshiped failed simply because the lack of respect and the lack of communication. " Dat's just whut Ah wants to say, Jody. You wouldn't listen. You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall." Joe doesn't care about Janie and doesn't listen to her. Joe doesn't value her as his wife just as an object so he could show her off. Joe would boss Janie around and disrespect her. They lacked the main things and that's why their marriage failed. -Fernie Dominguez 2nd
Joe and Janie's marriage failed because Joe was too controlling of Janie. Joe forbid Janie from enaganing in conversations with the men at the store, he ordered her to keep her hair tied up, and he only allowed Janie to do what he wanted her to do. As Joe was nearing his death, Janie tells him "But you wasn't satisfied wid me de way Ah was. Naw! Mah own mind had tuh be squeezed and crowded out tuh make room for yours in me." Janie uses her last opportunity to talk to Joe to express her built up thoughts [over the last 20 years of her marriage] that she was never allowed to let out under Joe's constricting control.
The reason why Jaine and Jody's marriage failed was because the way Jody changed after he became the mayor of Eatonville. The reason why Jaine left with Jody was because she thought he would treat her with the respect that she deserves, but after Jody became the mayor of Eatonville this all changed. Jody disrespects Jaine many times about her looks and her age. For example, "I god amighty! A women stay round uh store till she get old as Methusalem and still can't cut a little thing like a plug of tobacco! Don't stand dere Rollin' yo' eyes at me wid yo rump nearly to yo' knees!" (Pg. 78). " whut's de matter wid you, nowhow? You ain't no young girl to be gettin all insulted bout yo looks. You ain't no young courtin gal. You'se uh ole woman, nearly forty," (pg. 79). The disrespect Jody treats Jaine with causes an isolation between them thus the reason the marriage failed. For example, " You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't know half know me atall," (pg. 86).
The marraige between Joe and Janie failed due to the lack of communication and respect. For one Joe had no respet towards Janie. In chapter six it states, "So when the bread didnt rise, and the fish wasnt quite done at the bone, and the rice was scorched,he slapped Janie until she had a ringing sound in her ears and told her about her brains before he stalked on back to the store." This shows that Joe was immensly abusive with Janie thus showing his lack of respect, love and care for her. as the story progresses he continues to abuse her and has no love or respect at all, as if he was blaming Janie for his back aches an his weight gain it says in chapter seven, "the more his back ached andhis muscle dissolved into fat and the fat melted off his bones, the more fractious he became with Janie. Especially in the store." This thus resulted into the failed marraige of Joe and Janie. -Elias Gutierrez 5th Period
The reason why janie and jody's marriage didnt work is because he wanted to control everything about her, and wanted a certain image. janie is someone who wants to just love life and just love, and he is someone who wants it his way all the time. "janie loved the conversation and sometimes she thought up good stories on the mule, but joe had forbidden her to indulge." (pg.53) Janie cant think for herself in this relationship, she has no say so in any decisions made for her by jody. Jody doesnt care for janie, even though he convinced janie, with love and care in the future, to runaway with her.
Joe and Janie's relationship failed because of the lack of respect and because Joe in the end isn't the person Janie thinks to be.. " Dat's just whut Ah wants to say, Jody. You wouldn't listen. You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall." Joe only cared for his opinion when he was with her and that led Janie to not want him and also realize that he wasn't the good old romantic guy and now all she gets is his money and she uses him in a way to get money since love is out of the question. And that is why the marriage failed.
The type of marriage that Janie and Joe has is a marriage that is controlled by Joe which soon progresses to constant bickering and many disagreements. Joe is obsessively power hungry which creates a monster in Janie's eyes. Joe is not what he seems once Janie runs away with him. He limits her freedom and believes she is not capable to do some things that men do. For example, in chapter 6, 'Janie loved the conversation and sometimes she thought up good stories on the mule, but Joe had forbidden her to indulge.' These limitations on Janie's freedom causes Janie to think twice about their relationship which soon starts to cause problems.
I believe the reason of failure for Joe and Janie's marriage was for the weak thought of consideration Joe had towards Janie. He did not let her make her own decisions, thus being controlling and insecure. Joe took it the point with his actions where Janie does not even try to have any affection towards him. "The bed was no longer a Daisy field for her and Joe to play in. It was a place where she went and laid down when she was sleepy and tired. " (pg. 71) shows the phase of where her lack of care is starting to come along and their marriage shows failure. Janie ended up realizing she had many thoughts about Joe that she had never expressed to him before and knew the wrongs of her relationship.
I think the marriage between Joe and Janie failed do to lack of communication and jealousy. For example, " That was because Joe never told Janie how jealous he was. He never told her how often he had seen the other men figuratively wallowing in it as she went about things in the store." Joe doesn't want to let Janie to know this because he knows Janie's from experience. Janie has left her married man for Joe just because of a couple cute promising lines. He knows how easily Janie is persuaded by men that he is afraid to let her know how men look at her. This then leads to the lack of communication from Joe which causes a tension and the realationship becomes controlling by Joe. This is why Janie's realationship fails with Joe Starks.
The marriage between Joe and Janie failed because once he became mayor he dedicated all his time towards the city instead of towards Janie. For example, " you done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me at all."said by Janie. That was a major reason as to why the marriage failed.-Nathan Aguilar
The reason why Joe and Janie's relationship was a fail was because there was lack of attention and respect. Joe was a busy man he was the mayor of Eatonville so most of his time he would be thinking about improving the world. Janie understood that but she felt as if he didn't even know his own wife "you done lived with for twenty years and you don't half know me at all" (chapter 8). There was also loss of affection she felt as if she was still young while and yet had no freedom and he was old and saggy. So the marriage went from okay to worst because little by little she lost interest and he kept pushing her away by making he feel as if she was no good at the store, house or as a wife. -Laura Mena 5th period
Joe and Janie had a bad marriage from the start because they got married without even knowing each other or each other's personalities. Once Joe gains a position of power the reader begins to see his true thoughts and personality. Joe believed that Janie was unintelligent and too delicate to be allowed to be like a normal married woman. "Aw naw they don't. They just think they's thinkin'. When Ah see one thing Ah understands ten. You see ten things and don't understand one." - Joe (pg.71). This certain quote shows Joe's view of women and this statement that women are uneducated and unable to comprehend one little thing. Janie is independent and thought for herself but never was listened to by Joe and just wanted to be involved in the town but learned to keep her mouth shut because she was the Mayor's wife. After that incident Janie questions their marriage and come to a conclusion. "The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands whenever company came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again." - Janie (pg.71) The marriage between Joe and Janie failed because Joe is a selfish, sexist man who never listened to Janie and only saw his own success and Janie is an independent woman who does not stand for other people controlling her life. -Sabrina Mannix, 3rd
There are many reasons why the marriage between Joe and Janie did not go well, but the main reason why it didn't work out is because of the mind set Joe had among women. There are many occasions where Joe pretty much discriminated women because they were inferior to men and could not do the things men do. One example was when Joe responded to Janie when she said that women also had the ability to think, not just men, "Aw naw they don't. They just think they's thinking," (pg 71). He is saying that women are so inferior that they don't have a mind of their own and cannot do things by themselves, much less think. Those types of discriminating statements that Joe said about women really disturbed and greatly irritated her. The majority of times when Joe made those remarks, "...that put Janie to thinking about the inside state of her marriage. Time came when she fought back with her tongue... But that didn't do her any good... He wanted her submission... She gradually... learned how to hush," (pg71). The way she tried to save her marriage was to hold her thoughts back because she couldn't win any argument. For years she's been holding her tongue about her thoughts and anger until she couldn't anymore, her husbands mind set truly bothered her a huge deal and she's been holding that for years. That is one out if the many reasons why her marriage became a failure. - Adan Rivas 1st period
Joe and Janies marriage did work at the beginnig, but after Joe became mayor everything started to fall apart. Janie didn't enjoy being with Joe anymore"The bed was no longer a daisy-field for her and Joe to play in. It was a place where she went and laid down when she was sleepy and tired"(pg.71). This quote and chapter demonstrate Janies feelings. Joes prideness did not allow him to be the man Janie meet back at the farm. Joe became stingy and selfish after being adressed as mayor at the town. - Genesis Ramirez, 6th
Janie had long beautiful blonde hair. He kept her locked up. Janie's and Joes love died down. Joe don't love her he treated her with disrespect and not as his
There were many reasons why Joe and janies marriage failed but the main ones were because the relationship lacked respect and because they had no true feelings for each other. When Joe became mayor of Eatonville, he made most of his time toward make the city better rather than with his wife. With him doing this she feels unappreciated for all that she doesas said in page 86 "you done lived wid me for twenty years and you dont half know me at all. Also because Joe wanted Janie to have a certain image. As Joe does this Janie realizes that she can make her own decisions and that he doesn't care for her.
The reason why Janie’s and Joe’s marriage didn’t work was because Joe didn’t have any respect for Janie. Joe was a complete different person as he was at the beginning. As in pg.55 Joe said “Her hair was not going to show in the store.” Which shows how jealous Joe towards other men to be looking at Janie’s long hair. It also shows how Joe is trying to control Janie. Which is making their relationship fall apart more and more every time.
One of the factors that contributed to Janie and Jody's fail at a relationship was not only did she leave Logan for him after barely knowing much about him, there was no real connection or communication between the two any more. Jody wanted to run things in the town, Eatonville, and have a control over things especially Janie in her appearance and in status of the other wives. For example, "Everybody was coming sort of fixed up, and he didn't mean for nobody else's wife to rank with her. She must look on herself as the bell-cow, the other women were the gang." (Pg 57) Jody seemed to revolve around more the town than Janie and she started to feel this push of their drifting apart as the responsibilities of Jody being mayor fell upon him, wanting to make things "safer" or more "appropriate" for the mayors wife, he did not let her indulge in the conversations of others stating he did not want her to pick up on the "trash-talk". Janie would work in the store and always be there to help Jody when he wanted something done, and Janie obliged, even though she had a few things to say for herself, for example, "She wanted to fight about it. 'But Ah hates disagreeement and comfusion, so Ah better not talk. It makes it hard tuh git along." (pg.69). There was no more communication over how she remembered it when they first met, and although she wants to keep things nice and without disputes, it seems like she wanted to continue imagining the two of them together like before they left Logan, and it just seemed that because of his leader-dictatorship over Janie, she didn't want things to go badly, thus lack of communication leaving for their marriage to already crumble. The moment he decided to take more priority over the town, the connection between was gone.
Joe and Janie's marriage did not work out because they are just not meant to be. "The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands whenever company came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again." Page 71. There was no longer love between the two. Joe started to neglect Janie and Joe felt like he ad a certain authority with her. Not only that but Joe does not treat Janie with respect. He does not care about what she has to say and what she thinks, it no longer means anything to him.
Joe and Janie's relationship was a failure mainly because it seemed as if Joe had total control of Janie's life; Joe was just an envious man . Joe was the type of guy that wanted what he thought was the best for his wife, in other words he limited and restricted the types of things her wife could do, he control her life. For example in pg.55 it states "Her hair was not going to show in the store", meaning that Joe doesn't want Janie's hair to be seen in public because other men will see it (jealousy/limiting). Also in pg.77 it states "You oughta throw somethin' over yo' shoulders befo' you go outside. You ain't no young pullet no mo'. You'se uh ole hen now.", here you can see that Joe is controlling her by telling Janie what she has to wear. To put everything together Joe sees Janie as an object, or better yet as a trophy.
From the extremly vast amount of reasons leading to the down fall of, Janie and Joe's, marriage I will only discuss three very obvious but problematic features causing such a failure of a relationship. First of the three, Joe was very constraining of Janie. Right from the first few pages of chapter 6(page 53), "Janie loved the conversation and sometimes she thought up good stories on the mule, but Joe had forbidden her to indulge," even in conversation she is shackeled by Joe. Number two of the three, Joe is senseless and cruel trying to preserve his image, "The more people in there the more ridicule he poured over her body to point attention away from his own" (page 78). With the qoute proving how Joe cares mostly about his image it's paves the road to conflict between Janie and Joe which, just a few paragraphs from the qoute, a "war" breaks out between the two which ends in Joe physically stricking Janie. The last reason to contribute to the failure of the marriage is the simple disconnetion Janie has formed over her years with Joe. Janie tells Joe "Listen, Jody, you ain't de Jody ah ran off down de road wid. You'se whut's left after he died" (page 86). Just stop and reread this qoute, what Janie say's in the simplest of words is "Joe your already dead to me." And this is on his death bed just moments before his death, there is a truely distinct decay of connection in those words showing how far apart these two charaters have been driven apart.
Jody and Janie's marriage didn't work due to the fact that, Jody is controlling what Janie wears and how her hair should be tied up because shes too old for that, and that should only be for the young gals, in chapter 7 on page 78 Jody discovers that Janie has cut the tobacco and says "I god almighty! A woman stay round uh store till she gets old as Methusalem and still can't cut a little thing like a plug of tobacco! Don't stand there rollin' yo' pop eyes at me wid yo' rump hangin' nearly to your knees!" this shows how Jody will criticize her about her age and bring her self esteem low. Jaime Balderrama
Joe and Janie were missing two of the most important aspects of a relationship which is respect and communication. While arguably Joe was busy being mayor of Eatonville which could have lead to the failing marriage. The couple would talk but it would quickly break into an argument. Then Joes lack of respect for Janie as he became controlling telling her what he wants for her appearance and even so far as insulting her such as "I god amighty! A women stay round uh store till she get old as Methusalem and still can't cut a little thing like a plug of tobacco! Don't stand dere Rollin' yo' eyes at me wid yo rump nearly to yo' knees!" in page 79. This lead to Janie to start having a lack of affection to Joe. With the Abuse Joe put to Janie this lead to them isolating themselves from each other thus adding to the downfall of the marriage.
The main reason that Joe and Janie's marriage failed was because Joe would not give Janie the respect she wanted. For example Joe never listened to Janie and never really knew her well because Joe was too busy helping the town and not listening to her. "You wouldn't listen. You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall" (pg86). Joe would always tell Janie she was doing something wrong and in the later years would tell her that she was an old woman and should not think of herself as something better. Another reason their marriage failed was because Joe stopped carrying about Janie when he became the mayor and was just married because she would cook for him.
The marriage between Janie and Joe had failed due to the lack of communication. The fact that Joe thought he had total power over the town including his wife. Janie pushed her away after being married to the "Mayor" for several years. She was no longer attracted to Joe as she was before, she started seeing the flaws as stated in the quote in Chapter 8 "Then too she noticed how baggy Joe was getting all over. Like bags hanging from an ironing board. A little sack hung from the corners of his eyes and rested on his cheek-bones; a loose filled bag of feathers hung from his ears and rested on his neck beneath his chin. A sack of flabby something hung from his lions and rested his thighs when he sat down" . Janie felt as if he was over exaggerating about the comment she confronted hum about in front of everyone he has embarrassed her for the years she has been married to him. She wasn't meticulous about the decision of running off with Joe and marrying him, as previous similarities she just does things without thinking, just so she could say he's living a "bright future".
Jody wanted a trophy wife. Someone who was easy on the eye and kept her mouth shut and did what she was supposed to do. Jody wanted to keep Janie all to himself out of jealousy. Janie didn't want to cause a fuss so she learned to keep her mouth shut. But when Janie decided to take a stand against Jody, Jody replied, "You gettin' too moufy, Janie," (page 75). And when Janie brings to light Jody's age, he feels robbed of his maleness. So he struck Janie. Jody was a sexist man who tried stifling Janie with all his might. That's why the relationship between the two failed, because Jody was trying to control Janie and Janie wouldn't speak out about her oppression.
One of the main reasons Janie and Joes marriage did not work out was because, he never treated her with respect. For example the book states " He had always been of root-doctors and all their kind, but now she saw a faker from over around Altamonte Springs, hanging around the place almost daily. Always taking in low tones when she came near, or hushed all together. She didn't know he was driven by desperate hope to appear the old-time body in her sight." Another reason was because they lacked communication. Joe was being very secretive with Janie, and controlling. Joe also like to put Janie down. For example her had told her that she was an old lady an nothing more.
The reasons why Janie and Joe's marriage fell apart began when Joe became mayor of Eatonville. When he became mayor, he felt he had power over the town people; this resulted into Joe feeling superior of everyone else, including Janie. He stopped caring for Janie and used her more as a trophie wife, which was just somebody to make him look good and sustain his leadership image."You wouldn't listen. You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall" (page 86) The marriage failed, because he never saw Jodie as equal to him; he treated her more as a slave than as his wife. His jealousy also played a big role in the marriage not working, he put her down and made her feel less of herself. "You oughta throw somethin' over yo' shoulders befo' you go outside. You ain't no young pullet no mo'. You'se uh ole hen now." (page 77) Joe had no respect for her opinions and feelings, he treated her as a child. But the main factor that destroyed there marriage was their lack communication in their relationship. Not talking about there problems resulted in both of them giving up in there marriage."The spirit of the marriage left the bedroom and took to living in the parlor. It was there to shake hands whenever company came to visit, but it never went back inside the bedroom again..The bed was no longer a daisy field for her and Joe to play in." (pg.71) This shows how far apart her and Joe had grown; all that Janie wanted was to feel appreciated and loved by her husband. But by not talking about there problems nothing was ever resolved, until it was to late. -Jacqui Benavides 2nd pd <3
When Janie speaks, she asserts herself and her own power; this of course, deeply troubles Joe. Janie's sharp retort in chapter 7 about Jody's feebleness completely shatters Joe's misconceptions about the extent of his power: he is "robbed ... of his illusion of irresistible maleness." Janie has reversed their situations. Earlier, Joe prevents her from speaking and asserting her identity; now, he himself is left without a voice: " Joe Starks didn't know the words for all this, but he knew the feeling." Stung by words, shown the limitations of his power, and robbed of his ability to speak, Joe breaks down. He resorts to physical violence-a display of beastliness-because his lofty aura has dissipated completely.
Joe and Janie's marriage changed as days went by, and not for the better. Joe became very controlling especially to little things such as hair being seen by other men as it was so long and pretty. There was one thing that stood out and it was in this sentence, found on page 71, "The bed was no longer a daisy-field for her and Joey to play in." This basically said that their marriage is no longer fun and games and sweettalk. Joe no longer had a wife and Janie was no longer a wife, she was but a mere OBJECT in his POSSESSION. A woman is not an object, she's a human being that needs love, affection, attention. Joe have her none of those, including respect. At all.
Joe and Janie's marriage failed because he was aggressive and male chauvinist. He controlled janies life by not letting her do stuff by herself. “Thank yuh fuh yo’ compliments, but nah wife don’t know nothin’ ‘bout no speech-makin’. Ah never married her for nothin’ lak dat. She’s uh woman and her place is in de home." Here joe doesn't think women can do the same as men and demostrates that things like this affect one's relationship. He just wants her to do what he wants and do what's best for women, been home. -Jennifer Arreola
Joe turned out to be someone he didn't seem to be at first. He doesn't treat Janie with respect. Joe only appreciates Janie's physical appearance. His lack of interest of her thoughts and affection turns their marriage for the worst. "You done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me atall" (page 86). Joe thought he knew what was best for Janie but wouldn't care for her opinions or treat her equally, as a wife.
Janie and Joe's marriage collapsed because of how much they rushed into it without getting to know each other first. Janie believed she fell in "love at first sight" with Joe, and was quick to leave Logan and marry him. It wasn't until years later Janie discovered the terrible personality in Joe. He was a sexist, and very controlling. He seemed to think that Janie was more of a possession to him than a wife, which made her distance herself from him. This really affected Joe because he felt as if Janie didn't want to get to know him, as he told her, "You done lived with me for 20 years and you don't half know me at all" (pg. 86) Any relationship that is rushed into is bound to fall apart. Just as theirs did. Maybe if they had gotten to know each other a little better, they would have saved themselves the trouble of possibly not getting married at all.
The marriage between Joe and Janie is a fail because they rush into their relationship right away. And Janie falls for Joe really soon. For Janie he is a really good guy that respects her, but as time passes by it starts to fade away. Joe wouldn't respect her. And their was lost of communication between them. She realized that Joe wasn't the same as how she met him. Joe would control Janie a lot. As it says "Her hair was not going to show in the store". This shows what a jealous guy he was that he didn't want for her to have attention by other guys. Those are reason why their relationship didn't work out.
Janie has definitely changed in that she has a better self-image. She is definitely happier and seemingly doesn't care what others think of her. Teacake is a huge role in her change in life. He brings out the best in her. In chapter 16, Janie even admits to Miss Turner that"Ah couldn't stand it if he wuz tuh quit me. Don't know whut Ah'd do. He kin take most any lil thing and make summertime out of it when times is dull."(pg.217) Here Janie explains why her relationship is good and displays her happiness to others. Janie finally is having a successful marriage and gets treated right.
Janie's and Joe's marriage failed because of the space they have created between the two of them. Joe was the a discriminating Mayor. The love that Joe had on Janie was fading after they married and Joe pushed her away and thought her inferior as for being a woman. He only kept her close to him to give an image to other people, but that masked they real relationship. Joe cared more of on his picture. He began to disrespect her and soon began to be physically manipulative. Janie felt the relationship died and felt disconnected from him.
Janie has more self confidence in herself. She seems not to care on what others think about her. There is an important person in her life. Teacake brngs them most out of her. this person probably has had the biggest impact on her life. "ah coudnt stand it if he wuz tuh quit me. Dont know whut Ahd do. He kin take mostany lil thing and make summertime out of it when times is dull." This quote basically shows that she cares for him and shes that they have a very nice relationship. But later on the marage with Joe didnt work out because they seemed to have different views on things. he only liked her for the image she gave him. He didnt treat her like he should have and she aught on to it and just decided to leave him.
Janie and Joe's marriage fails most likely because Janie, trying to find an easy way out of her previous marriage w/ Johnny, falls for the kind things Joe says without thoughraly evaluating Johnnys opinion as to why shed be making a dumb decision is she left him. As events make their way to Joe becoming Mayor, he and Janie are always in the spot light of the town's interest such as when Joe buys the mule off of Matt and the story gets altered but they make for good conversation. "Janie loved the conversation and sometimes she thought of good stories on the mule l but Joe had forbidden her to indulge" (pg. 53). This shows that even socialising with those around her or, 'trashy people' was a must NOT. Because she was his wife, she was expected to keep a high maintenance attitude and not waist time with the people who made up the town. In other words, he was to worried about his own image than anything else. -Alexandra Faith Yrigoyen
The reason Janie's and Joe's relationship doesn't work is because they were never really happy they both wanted different things. Then again Joe never really treated her nice he would treat her more like a possession than an actual person with feelings. So they would always get into fights.

ReplyDeleteThe reason why Joes Stark's relationship with Janie failed in my opinion was because Joe was jelous, which led to disrespect .
ReplyDeleteThe reason their marriage failed was because the way joe treated her.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why Joe's and Janie's marriage didnt work was because they would get into arguments with each other.
ReplyDeleteJanie and Joe's marriage failed because Joe treated Janie wrong and didn't pay enough attention to her as he should have.

ReplyDeleteElizabeth Rodriguez
Janie and Joe's marriage failed because Joe lost his charm and his respect for Janie. She became nothing special to him. Soon, he believed Janie didn't appreciate the things he does for her. The author wrote, "Here he was just pouring honor all over her; building a high chair for her to sit in and overlook the world and she here pouting over it!" Janie then realizes that her relationship with Joe has crumbled to dust.
ReplyDeleteJanie and Joe's marriage failed because of his lack of respect and the loss of affection between them. 86)."
ReplyDeleteThe reason why Janie's marriage with Joe did not work out is because he has no respect towards her. Joe was not the way he was in the beginning. He was controlling, "Her hair was not going to show in the store." pg. 55, Joe is showing jealousy towards this situation. Joe did not want for other men to be looking at her long hair. Their marriage was not the same, it kept changing day by day.
ReplyDeleteWith Jody becoming the mayor of Eatonville, he valued most of his time toward making the city a better place to live in, instead of spending time with his wife Janie.
ReplyDelete-Devante Titus

ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's marriage was basicly fake from start to end. Janie's love for Joe was genuine; as the love from Joe to Janie was false.
ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's marriage failed because Joe didn't demonstrate love to Janie, he was always hurting her physically and mentally.
ReplyDeleteAilyn Flores
ReplyDeleteThe reason why Joe and Janie's marriage failed was because Joe stopped showing Janie love and respect.
ReplyDeleteJanie and Joe's marriage didn't work out because they had some problems.
ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's marriage failed because of many reasons such as lack of communication, love, and respect.

ReplyDeleteJoe's and Janie's relationship failed because Joe was a jealous and possessive man.

ReplyDeleteJody appeared to be a very nice man when he first turned up in the novel, but as Janie comes to realize, he has a very ugly personality.

You'se uh old hen now.'" The marriage inbetween Joe and Janie failed because as time passed by, she saw his true colors. Joe wasn't the man he showed Janie when they first met.

DeleteJanie's marriage with Joe Stark started to grow apart over the years. The author says on the 72nd page, 2nd paragraph that "She had found that she had lost a host of thoughts she had never expressed to him (Joe), and numerous emotions she had never let Jody know about."
ReplyDeleteIt is these hosts of thoughts that she had kept secret and Joe Starks' Mayorship and focus on the town along with old age that contributed to the downfall of Joe and Janie's marriage.

The reason was because after a while of there marriage. She started thinking of herself as worthless and thinking of how a different life would be. Her husband even began to treat he4 badly not like he used to or promised her.
ReplyDeleteThe marriage between Joe and Janie soon failed for many reasons.
ReplyDeleteThe marriage between Janie and Joe had many complications in the relationship.
ReplyDeleteDerek Fuller
ReplyDeleteThe reason why Joe and Janies marriage didn't work is because Joe disrespected her so much by bossing her around and also talking so much bad stuff behind her back and also in public and that is not right.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why joes and Janie's marriage failed was because they would argue and hardly communicated. And you could have but you was so busy worshippin de works of yo own hands, and cuffin folks around in their minds till you didn't see uh whole heap uh things yuh could have" chapter 8

ReplyDeleteThe marriage from Joe and Janie failed because at first Joe seemed like the man of the house and he was all romantic but in the end he turned out not to be what he seemed.
ReplyDeleteJanie values herself as a person, so when Joe wanted Jaine to be a sort of "trophy wife" she was unhappy and felt trapped.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why Janie's marriage with Joe didn't work out was because he wouldn't respect her anymore and wasn't romantic anymore like he said he would be.
ReplyDeleteThe marriage between the Janie and Joe failed simply because they did not know each other as much as they thought they did.
ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's marriage failed because it wasn't real.

ReplyDeleteJanie and Jody's marriage failed mainly because Jody did not have a high opinion of women.

ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's marriage failed because of the way Joe treated Janie.

ReplyDeleteIt is my firm belief that the marriage failed because it was formed on false pretenses of love not unlike her previous marriage.
ReplyDeleteJanie and Jody's relationship failed for many reasons.
ReplyDeleteJanie's and Joe's relationship ended because as they're relationship grew, their love got smaller.

ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's relationshiped failed simply because the lack of respect and the lack of communication.

ReplyDeleteThe reason why Jaine and Jody's marriage failed was because the way Jody changed after he became the mayor of Eatonville.

ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's relationship failed because of the lack of respect and because Joe in the end isn't the person Janie thinks to be..
ReplyDeleteThe type of marriage that Janie and Joe has is a marriage that is controlled by Joe which soon progresses to constant bickering and many disagreements.
ReplyDeleteI believe the reason of failure for Joe and Janie's marriage was for the weak thought of consideration Joe had towards Janie.
ReplyDeleteI think the marriage between Joe and Janie failed do to lack of communication and jealousy.
ReplyDeleteThe marriage between Joe and Janie failed because once he became mayor he dedicated all his time towards the city instead of towards Janie. For example, " you done lived wid me for twenty years and you don't half know me at all."said by Janie. That was a major reason as to why the marriage failed.-Nathan Aguilar
DeleteThe reason why Joe and Janie's relationship was a fail was because there was lack of attention and respect.

Janie had long beautiful blonde hair. He kept her locked up. Janie's and Joes love died down. Joe don't love her he treated her with disrespect and not as his
ReplyDeleteThere were many reasons why Joe and janies marriage failed but the main ones were because the relationship lacked respect and because they had no true feelings for each other.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why Janie’s and Joe’s marriage didn’t work was because Joe didn’t have any respect for Janie.

ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's marriage did not work out because they are just not meant to be.
ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's relationship was a failure mainly because it seemed as if Joe had total control of Janie's life; Joe was just an envious man .
ReplyDeleteFrom the extremly vast amount of reasons leading to the down fall of, Janie and Joe's, marriage I will only discuss three very obvious but problematic features causing such a failure of a relationship.
ReplyDeleteJody and Janie's marriage didn't work due to the fact that, Jody is controlling what Janie wears and how her hair should be tied up because shes too old for that, and that should only be for the young gals, in chapter 7 on page 78 Jody discovers that Janie has cut the tobacco and says "I god almighty!
ReplyDeleteJaime Balderrama
ReplyDeletecr
ReplyDeleteThe marriage between Janie and Joe had failed due to the lack of communication.
ReplyDeleteJody wanted a trophy wife.
ReplyDeleteOne of the main reasons Janie and Joes marriage did not work out was because, he never treated her with respect.
ReplyDeleteThe reasons why Janie and Joe's marriage fell apart began when Joe became mayor of Eatonville.

ReplyDeleteJoe and Janie's marriage changed as days went by, and not for the better.

ReplyDeleteJanie and Joe's marriage collapsed because of how much they rushed into it without getting to know each other first.
ReplyDeleteThe marriage between Joe and Janie is a fail because they rush into their relationship right away.
ReplyDeleteJanie has definitely changed in that she has a better self-image.
ReplyDeleteJanie's and Joe's marriage failed because of the space they have created between the two of them.
ReplyDeleteJanie has more self confidence in herself.
ReplyDeleteJanie and Joe's marriage fails most likely because Janie, trying to find an easy way out of her previous marriage w/ Johnny, falls for the kind things Joe says without thoughraly evaluating Johnnys opinion as to why shed be making a dumb decision is she left him.
ReplyDeleteAs events make their way to Joe becoming Mayor, he and Janie are always in the spot light of the town's interest such as when Joe buys the mule off of Matt and the story gets altered but they make for good conversation.

The reason Janie's and Joe's relationship doesn't work is because they were never really happy they both wanted different things. Then again Joe never really treated her nice he would treat her more like a possession than an actual person with feelings. So they would always get into fights.
